"A media scene of intolerance, indifference and sensitive media frivolities“

The media scene is largely a reflection of the political interests dominating a country. Consequently, the influence of civilized media and civil society organizations will remain marginal; if institutional politics does not stem the tide of hate speech, a mass revision of Antifascist history, extolling the Ustaša regime and stigmatization of Serbs and other minorities, it is hard to expect that anyone will.

Attacks on medical workers, teachers to be prosecuted ex officio

The Croatian government on Thursday sent to parliament final amendments to the Penal Code expanding legal protection to healthcare workers and teachers so that threats and acts of coercion against those workers could be prosecuted ex officio.

Commemorative rally held in Zagreb following attack on Charlie Hebdo

About 50 people, including representatives of the media, gathered in Zagreb's French Republic Square on Thursday to pay tribute to the victims of Wednesday's terrorist attack on the Paris offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, in which 12 people were killed.

MPs call for more resolutely punishing hate speech

Members of parliament said on Friday the situation in Croatian media was deteriorating and that local media were barely surviving, calling for more resolutely punishing hate speech and the spreading of intolerance.

Media Integrity Matters

The book promotion was held in the Croatian Journalists’ Association, followed by a public discussion panel themed “How to Return Media and Journalism to the Sphere of Public Interest – Croatian Case” and moderated by Brankica Petković (The Peace Institute). Introductory remarks set the tone for the rest of the discussion and highlighted many salient points arrived at through research conducted by Helena Popović (Faculty of Political Science, Zagreb). One of the South East European Media Observatory project goals is to research media integrity, a new analytical term developed by the research team and defined as “those values in journalism that enable the field and activity of journalism to act in public interest” (Petković).

Journalists Association again pushes for elimination of defamation provision

The Croatian Journalists Association (HND) has reiterated its request for revoking the provision on punishable defamation from the Penal Code, and the latest call for rescinding the controversial provision came on Friday after a recent judgement by a municipal court in Zagreb that ordered the commercial RTL broadcaster to pay HRK 50,000 to Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic because it aired an interview with Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic which included disparaging remarks about Bandic.
