GONG and other partner organizations in the GEAR project – including Nansen Dialogue Centre from Osijek, CIVES from Spain, Mirovni inštitut from Slovenia, GSI Italia from Italy and Nansen Dialogue Centre Skopje from Macedonia – held a series of youth trainings , exchanges and workshops in Jezerčica and Osijek.
As Europe undergoes many political changes and important decisions are to be made, the European Civic Forum and its member organizations such as GONG want to ensure that the processes are democratic and inclusive of all Europeans.
GONG is a partner in the implementation of the „Against Hate“ project, which focuses on monitoring the incidence of hate speech in the public space and raising the capacity of the police and judiciary to address both hate speech and sanction hate crimes.
GONG is currently working on training teachers to acquire the skills to teach students about civic engagement and participation in policy making. Because GONG believes in civic participation, it included an “Education for Citizenship Literacy” module in its curriculum to educate teachers about political decision-making processes and civic engagement. Workshops on these topics were held for professional teachers in Sisak and Pazin in March and Rijeka in April. In June, the workshops are planned for teachers in Primorsko-goranska County and Osijek.
An educational program for educators and teachers tackling media literacy is one of the most important educational programs that GONG has designed. It aims to equip teachers to properly educate and inform their students about the significance of media literacy today. The program also focuses on teaching students how to develop a critical approach towards newspaper, electronic and digital media.
Intercultural learning involves learning about differences, other cultures and their customs, openness of communication, building relationships with others, and developing awareness that building a community in which we live is only possible with the involvement of all of its participants.
From 2 to 7 of July, a joint seminar by GONG and Nansen Dialogue centre was held in the city of Zadar in Croatia.
CROSOL – Croatian Platform for International Citizen Solidarity joined protests across Europe to support Hungarian NGOs. Reacting to the appeal of Amnesty International and 500 European associations under the umbrella of Civil Society Europe, Prime Minister Orban said that "Soros and its affiliates are trying to undermine the capabilities of the Hungarian state to protect its borders from migrants, and thus national security”.
On Thursday, April 13, 2017 GONG celebrated its 20th birthday. The event was marked by a conference and the accompanying cultural program held in Zagreb's Students' Center and attended by more than 200 activists of different generations and different struggles from Croatia and the neighbouring countries. The conference „In Search of a Citizen: Regional Time-machine of Activist and Artistic Practices“ took place on April 13, 2017, on the occasion of GONG's 20th birthday. The event involved 208 citizens, including 169 participants from Croatia, 10 participants from Serbia, 6 participants from Montenegro, 10 participants from Macedonia and 13 participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
