HDZ wins runoff races for county prefects in all but two counties

ZAGREB, June 1 (Hina) - The State Electoral Commission released at 11pm on Sunday the results of the second round of local elections from all polling stations in seven counties, while ballots were yet to be counted from ten polling stations in Osijek-Baranja County and from as many in Split-Dalmatia County.

The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and its coalition partners won in seven counties, while two regional parties -- the Croatian Democratic Party of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB) and the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) -- were victorious in Osijek-Baranja County and Istria County respectively.

Croatia's longest-serving county prefect, the IDS candidate backed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Croatian People's Party (HNS), Ivan Jakovcic, received 59.62 per cent of the vote, while his rival, independent candidate Plinio Cuccurin, gained 39.15 per cent. In the first round two weeks ago, Jakovcic won 47.35 per cent and Cuccurin 24.60 per cent.

In the race for the Prefect of Osijek-Baranja County, HDSSB leader Vladimir Sisljagic leads with 54.46 per cent of votes, while the candidate of an HDZ-led coalition, Tomislav Ivic, captured 42.82 per cent. In the first round, Sisljagic had 39.63 per cent and Ivic 38.81 per cent.

In Split-Dalmatia County, HDZ candidate Ante Sanader garnered 58.71 per cent of the vote, while his rival, Veljan Radojkovic, backed by a coalition of the SDP, HNS, HSU (Croatian Pensioners' Party), DC (Democratic Centre) and SU (Pensioners' Party), took 38.23 per cent. Two weeks ago, Sanader got 47.53 per cent and Radojkovic 34.19 per cent.
